The Meek Will Inherit the Land

Pastor Ken

Psalm 37:8-11 (NIV)

Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil. For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land. A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.

Psalm 37 addresses the frustration which stems from the good guy finishing last while the bad guy finishes first. It’s at such times we’re most tempted to ditch personal integrity for the sake of “fighting dirty.” But the psalm advises us to keep things in perspective. While the bad guy might have the upper hand now, it’s not the end result. The Lord promises that one day, He'll balance the scales of justice.

In the meantime, meekness is the strength and the discipline and the patience to wait things out. It’s like a plumber friend of mine who jokingly says, “My going rate is $40 an hour unless you want to help me, then it’s $80 an hour!”. His point being that he is much more proficient at doing his job as long as I’m staying out of his way. It is the same in our personal relationship with God. Meekness entails staying out of God’s way and letting Him do His job.

The psalm says that if you will practice meekness, you will “inherit the land.” It is a phrase which implies winning the prize or finishing first. Paul said it like this in I Corinthians 2:9…

I Corinthians 2:9 (NLT)

No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.

God has rewards in store for you! His rewards are bigger, grander, more extravagant, and more abundant than anything you could’ve ever imagined. But until the day those rewards are realized, you must be meek. You must trust and obey God even when it seems as if the bad guy is getting the upper hand.

On this Monday morning, don’t allow a temporary setback to steal your reward. God is working behind the scenes. If you will obediently trust Him…and let Him do His job…He will help you attain the prize!

Have a great Monday!
