King David's Sin
King David was devoted to God, and yet he still sinned. One prominent story can be found in 2 Samuel 11. Let’s recap the story together. Jerusalem was at war with the Ammonites. During this time, David, who was king of Israel, saw a woman bathing on the roof of a house near his. He sent for the woman, laid with her, and she conceived a child.
When David heard of this, he sent for the woman’s husband, Uriah, and tried to trick him to lay with his wife. When this did not happen, King David sent a letter to Uriah.
“In the letter he wrote, ‘Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, that he may be struck down and die.’” (2 Samuel 11:14 ESV)
In the end, Uriah died in the battle, and his wife, Bathsheba, married King David. However, “...the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.” (2 Samuel 11:27b ESV).
One important lesson that we can learn from David’s story is that David experienced the natural consequence of his sin, but that did not remove him from his relationship with God. David’s secret sin was made public, his child died, and his family continued to repeat the same actions as David. However, these natural punishments did not stop God from restoring his relationship with David. God removed David’s guilt and shame, but he did not remove his consequences. David enjoyed a beautiful relationship with God and even wrote many psalms praising Him.
David said this, “I have sinned against the Lord..” (2 Samuel 12:13 ESV). Our sins that we commit are always against God, so we must seek first his forgiveness. However, it is important to remember that no sin is too great for God to forgive and we need to actively be seeking his forgiveness and wanting to grow in our relationship with Him.
Have a blessed Monday.
