Hebrews 1:9 (NIV)
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.
There is the story of an old man who carried a little can of oil with him wherever he went, and if he passed through a door or a gate that squeaked, he’d oil the hinge or the latch, thus making it easier and more pleasant for those who came after him.
There are many lives that creak and grate harshly against their everyday burdens. They need lubricating with the oil of joy, or gentleness, or kindness. Over the course of this year, you will probably intersect with them; perhaps just once, never to meet them again. Therefore, it behooves you to keep your “oil” full at all times, ready to soften the hard edges left by sin.
“Upon the wheel of pain so many weary lives are broken.
We live in vain who give no tender token. Let us be kind.”
On this first Monday of the New Year, may you have many opportunities to fill others with the oil of joy!
Have a great day!
